Principal's News

Week 9, Term 2, 2022

Photo
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It is hard to believe that we have just over a week remaining of this term. The busyness of school life certainly makes the time fly!

As mentioned last week, our teachers are in the process of finalising the Semester One student reports. Feedback from staff so far has been overwhelmingly positive about how the students have grown academically, socially, and emotionally over the last two terms. Next week you will also receive your child's Evidence of Learning Folder. When you receive this folder we encourage you to take the time to ask your child about their successes and challenges and how they have worked towards growth in the different learning areas.

With the term almost over, many people are thinking about the holidays. It is important that those families wishing to access Vacation Care, register ASAP. Please remember that families who have not enrolled by 18th June will incur a $50 administration fee.

Staffing Update: Miss Nakita Staines will not be returning to St Mary’s in Semester Two. We are currently finalising the recruitment for a replacement teacher for Room 14 and will make announcements to families next week. On behalf of our school community, I convey to Nakita our best wishes and God’s blessings as she moves to the next stage of her teaching career.

Enrolments for 2023 Transition: Enrolments from families outside of our existing families are now open for 2023. Existing families of St Mary’s are encouraged to return enrolment forms as soon as possible to ensure places are kept for our existing families.

An enrolment pack is available on line from our website or alternatively from the front office in Lindsay Street. Children who are born between 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018, are eligible for entry into the 2023 Transition class.

In faith and love,

Rosie Harrison

Semester 1 Academic Reports

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School’s reporting processes reflect the requirements outlined in the Northern Territory Department of Education’s Assessment and Reporting policy.

The following information provides further background and details on the academic reporting process and how judgements are made in order to award the overall results seen in your child’s report.

What requirements are there for reporting to parents?
Schools are required to provide written reports, at least twice a year, on student achievement. A 5-point scale is used to outline student achievement against the year level achievement standard.

The approved 5-point scale used at St Mary’s is outlined below:
The grades awarded on this report are based on:
A = Evidence of learning demonstrates outstanding achievement at this year level.
B = Evidence of learning demonstrates high achievement at this year level.
C = Evidence of learning demonstrates sound achievement at this year level.
D = Evidence of learning demonstrates limited achievement at this year level.
E = Evidence of learning demonstrates very limited achievement at this year level.
N = Not Assessed

What does a ‘C’ Sound achievement standard mean?
For all Australian Curriculum subject areas, students are assessed against the relevant Achievement Standard for that year level. It is important to recognise that the Australian Curriculum achievement standards clearly outlines the expectations of a ‘C’ standard. If your child receives a ‘C’ or ‘Sound’ achievement, they are operating at the year level standard and expectation. This means that the student is achieving everything required for the subject at that stage in their corresponding year level at school. Therefore, attaining a ‘C’ or ‘Sound’ achievement means your child is on target for their age and year level.

What information will be in the report?
The contents of this report are based on what has been taught, learned and assessed within this semester. As this is a mid-year Academic Progress Report, only the subject strands that have been taught and assessed during this reporting period will be assessed. Any strands not assessed this semester will be assessed and reported in the end of year report.

When will I receive my child’s report?
Semester One reports are emailed to parents during the last week of Term 2 on Friday 24th June. If you would like to request a printed report, please email the front office. Please ensure that we have the most up to date email address on file at the office to ensure you receive your child’s report. If you do not receive your child's report, please check your spam folder or contact the front office.

If you have any queries about reporting at St Mary’s please contact our Deputy Principal christine.ferreira@nt.catholic.edu.au.

We are Sun Smart!

Living in the Top End brings many benefits... particularly while other states are enduring the blistering cold weather, our wonderful Territory brings year long sunshine and bright sunny days.
However, this also means that we need to be sun smart. Too much of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. UV damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia. It is also one of the most preventable cancers.
You can’t see or feel the sun’s UV. Whatever the weather, if the UV levels are three or more, it’s important to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide!

Be sure to check the UV widget on our school website homepage, which gives valuable information regarding the current UV index.

At St Mary's we are currently revising and updating our Sun Smart School application. However we are noticing an increasing number of children coming to school without a hat. Please ensure your child has a St Mary's wide brimmed hat to wear each day. Children without hats are asked to play in shaded undercover areas.

Sunsafe practices at St Mary's:
  • We ensure that sun protection is considered for all outside school events and activities, on-site and off-site, including sports. We try to plan outdoor activities to minimise exposure to the sun or consider additional shade options.
  • Students are encouraged to make use of shaded areas when outside. Students eat lunch in the shaded under cover areas.
  • We encourage students to keep hydrated by drinking water.
  • We encourage students to protect themselves with broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF30 (Sun Protection Factor) which is available in classrooms.
  • Staff are encouraged to model appropriate sunsafe behaviour by wearing sun protective hats and clothing, sunscreen, and making use of shade whenever possible. Parents are also encouraged to wear sunhats and be positive role models when participating in school activities.

This year, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is raising funds for much needed literacy resources for all classes across the school! Our teachers have been taking part in professional development, learning about the latest research and evidence-based practise around effective instruction and the systematic teaching of reading. So to support the teaching and learning of reading, we plan on purchasing a wide range of new reading resources, including take home readers, guided reading texts, shareable big books, reading intervention resources, as well as teacher resource books.

Spirit of St Mary's Update

This morning at assembly, Carter in Room 13 suggested we add 3 more R’s to our goals. He suggested this after Room 14 completed their presentation on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. We decided to give double point today for student showing the four Rs and the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Watch this space for a special announcement of a Spirit Cup Fun Day next Friday. We think St Mary’s can reach their goal of 50,000.

If we reach 50,000 on Monday we will announce a free dress day on Friday, June 14th and some fun activities!

Canteen Online Orders & Update

download
To streamline processes across the school, in 2022 we are now only accepting online orders for lunches.
All families need to set up an account for online ordering through Flexischools, which is linked directly in the School Stream App. Details on how to set up an account can be found in the “CANTEEN” tab of School Stream. There is no need to download the Flexischools App, it can all be accessed from the School Stream App.

For those with an existing account, you will need to update your child's class and room number for 2022 before placing your first order. Please refer to the instructions in School Stream.

You can find the updated 2022 Canteen menu in School Stream. Please note daily orders close at 8.40am. Any orders received after this time, will be fulfilled subject to availability of stock and may be substituted for a basic sandwich.

Please note that at this time our school canteen has been impacted by supplier shortages. Some items may be temporarily unavailable and will be marked as 'out of stock' when ordering. Thank you for your understanding.
