Principal's News

Week 7, Term 2, 2022

Photo
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

In recent weeks we turned our focus on Laudato Si’, this is a movement in response to being called by Pope Francis to come together as one global Catholic family committed to peace and caring for God’s creation. Pope Francis is asking us to think about how we can protect our common home by taking action in whatever way we can. Here at St Mary’s students from Transition to Year 6 in partnership with our staff are working towards ensuring that we have a more sustainable school.

One of the actions we are working on is to re-establish some gardens and green spaces around the school. You would have noticed our gradual rejuvenation of the garden spaces along both Lindsay and Cavanagh streets. The establishment of a Sensory garden is another project in the works. These small steps certainly support Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ movement to respond to the cry of the earth and ecological education. Please visit Laudato Si' Goals - Laudato Si' Action Platform (laudatosiactionplatform.org) to read more about Pope Francis’ 8 goals on how we can achieve this. Keep an eye out for information around our upcoming 2022 Art Show in Term 3, this year the show will have the theme of Ladauto Si'.

Farewell and ‘see you later’ Frew family: This week we farewelled Mrs Casey Frew and her family as they continue on their travels around Australia. Casey’s ‘couple of weeks’ in Darwin last year very quickly turned into more than half a year of leading Literacy Intervention for our students here at St Mary’s. We were certainly on the receiving end of some wonderful expertise from Casey in supporting students’ achieve fantastic individual growth in Reading. We will miss her warmth, care and dedication to our school in this capacity and wish her the very best as she travels with her Archie, Evie and Angus to exciting new destinations.

Enrolments for 2023 Transition: Enrolments from families outside of our existing families are now open for 2023. Existing families of St Mary’s are encouraged to return enrolment forms as soon as possible to ensure places are kept for our existing families.

An enrolment pack is available on line from our website or alternatively from the front office in Lindsay Street. Children who are born between 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018, are eligible for entry into the 2023 Transition class.

A massive thank you to all students and families of the students wearing the correct school uniform each day - this is so lovely to see.

In faith and love,
Rosie Harrison

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

O Come Holy Spirit,
fill the hears of your faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, who has taught the hearts of the faithful
by the light of the Holy Spirit,
grant that by the gift of that same Spirit
we may be always truly wise
and ever rejoice in his consolation.
Amen

Reconciliation Week

Over the past week and half at St Mary's we have been comemorating Reconciliation Week. Students across the school have been working in class to research the different Indigenous cultures from around Australia to create a map which reflects the diversity of cultures and traditions from across the different areas. My Lyons and Ms Zufferey have also been working behind the scenes with students to create a Reconciliation inspired Art Work reflecting this year's theme of 'Be Brave, Make Change'. Mr Derrick and Mr Lyons also shared some Tiwi inspired dances with us at last week's assembly. Thank you Mr Lyons for leading all of these activities for our community this week and to Ms Zufferey for sharing her artistic talents with our students!

Joyful June

This month’s Action For Happiness calendar’s theme is ‘Joyful June’. The activities in the calendar focus on moments, reflections and people that bring us joy. Take a moment each day to take stock of all of the blessings we have in our life, can shift a negative mindset into a positive one. Gratitude in all forms is associated with happiness. Something as simple as keeping a gratitude journal causes less stress, improves the quality of sleep, and builds emotional awareness (Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005). See the calendar for lots of ideas to spread joy in June.

Colour run

The Colour Run will take place this coming Friday, June 10th. This year, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is raising funds for much needed literacy resources for all classes across the school! Our teachers have been taking part in professional development, learning about the latest research and evidence-based practise around effective instruction and the systematic teaching of reading. So to support the teaching and learning of reading, we plan on purchasing a wide range of new reading resources, including take home readers, guided reading texts, shareable big books, reading intervention resources, as well as teacher resource books.

Additional information has been sent to families on School Stream today.

If you wish to support this event and fundraise, please go to the School Fun Run website to create an online fundraising profile: https://app.schoolfundraising.com.au/users/sign_up or collect cash donations and fill in your booklet. The students also have an opportunity to win prizes based on the amount of money they raise.

If you have any questions, please contact the School Colour Run team on 1800 386 786 and they will gladly assist. Alternatively, please contact Ms Walsh: sinead.walsh@nt.catholic.edu.au.

All staff will be present on the day to provide duty of care throughout the event. Families are welcome and encouraged to come along on the day.
Thank you for your support and generosity. We had so much fun last year and look forward to another fun event this year!

download
To streamline processes across the school, in 2022 we are now only accepting online orders for lunches.
All families need to set up an account for online ordering through Flexischools, which is linked directly in the School Stream App. Details on how to set up an account can be found in the “CANTEEN” tab of School Stream. There is no need to download the Flexischools App, it can all be accessed from the School Stream App.

For those with an existing account, you will need to update your child's class and room number for 2022 before placing your first order. Please refer to the instructions in School Stream.

You can find the updated 2022 Canteen menu in School Stream. Please note daily orders close at 8.40am. Any orders received after this time, will be fulfilled subject to availability of stock and may be substituted for a basic sandwich.

Please note that at this time our school canteen has been impacted by supplier shortages. Some items may be temporarily unavailable and will be marked as 'out of stock' when ordering. Thank you for your understanding.
