Deputy Principal's News

Week 2, Term 4, 2023

Dear Families

There is an air of excitement this term at St. Mary’s with so many exciting events planned. Please check the school calendar and School Stream to ensure you don’t miss any!

Last term staff, students and families were invited to participate in an online survey, Tell Them From Me. The results of our survey enable us to measure and understand existing targets and inform our strategic and annual improvement plans. This sort of planning allows us to plan for factors that are impactful for student learning and wellbeing within our school. The data allows us to celebrate progress and consider opportunities for growth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for completing this survey for our school.

This term your child will receive an end of year academic report. To provide your child with the best opportunities for learning and growth, please ensure your child not only attends school regularly, but is also on time to school. Teachers use every precious minute they get with your child and repeated absences or tardiness can have an impact on children’s learning.

Has your child attended OSHC at St Mary’s? It is a lot of fun! We have been experiencing very high attendance rates at after school care. If you require a casual booking, it is always advisable to make this booking through School Stream or the school office as early as you can.

In Week 3, we welcome our Read Write Inc Consultant: Susan Wright will visit to support our teachers and children with literacy learning. Many of you would be aware that at St Mary’s we use a rigorous literacy program designed to create confident and fluent readers, speakers and writers. This program is called Read, Write Inc (RWI). It is based on current, known best practice and over 12 years of proven strategies across many countries. Daily, students at St Mary’s from Transition to Year 4, participate in a comprehensive lesson that encourages students to speak, read and write known and new content with a trained RWI teacher.

Each morning, 8 separate learning groups are operating to ensure children are learning in targeted, individualised ways, linked directly to their current literacy achievement, supporting them to the next stage of their learning. This is an intentional approach that has seen exponential literacy learning.

We welcome Susan’s expertise and mentoring to ensure we retain fidelity in our approach to the program, and recognise the ways we can monitor our progress, improve practice, and evaluate our growth to enable this cyclical process to continue.

World Teachers’ Day occurs next Friday 27th October. This is a day for us to celebrate our teachers and acknowledge the extraordinary effort they make each day for our children. Teaching is a rigorous job with incredible rewards.

Every small token of appreciation is gratefully received; if you have a chance, please take a moment to Thank your child’s teacher for the love and commitment they show to your child and our school community. We are so proud of our Teachers at St Mary’s and value the incredible job they do.

Also next Friday, we acknowledge World Mission Day and we will participate in Socktober- more information to come.

There were some very excited families in attendance at last night’s Family Information night for the 5/6 trip to Canberra. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the enormous effort of Miss Nolan and Miss O’Mara. Planning an excursion to a different State/Territory with over 40 children and 6 adults is quite a process and I thank these wonderful teachers for undertaking this. I have no doubt that this will be an unforgettable experience for the children.

If you utilise the Kiss and Go Zone, please access the message posted on Wednesday morning on School Stream. This message refreshes the guidelines for using this area. Please be patient when using this zone. Please also endeavour to spend no more than 2 minutes so we keep the line moving. Our primary objective is keeping children safe.

There are a large number of children coming to school without a hat. Please check your child has a hat and brings it to school. It is far too hot and sunny for children to be without their hat.

If you are lucky enough to find an extra hat at home that may belong to another child, please return it to school office as many children have misplaced their hat.

Farewell to Molly (Room 14) and family who leave our school community this week.

Welcome to Savvina (Room 8) and family; Mr Engelo at the CoL; Ms Sandra in Room 7 and Ms Queenie in Room 14. I feel confident they will feel embraced by St. Mary’s community and we feel blessed to have them.

Wishing you all a blessed week.

Take very good care of yourself.

Prayer

Together let us pray:

Creator God,
Create in us a new sense of solidarity with the poor. Give us the courage to reach out to the excluded, the
energy to walk with the lost and the words to encourage the lonely.
May we pour out our lives in service.
Amen

Religious Education News

Socktober: Socktober for Mission Month encourages us to engage with mission for children by using our heads to enquire about the reality of the world around us, using our hearts to feel empathy for those in situations of great need, and using our hands to take action for them in whatever way we are able.

During the month of October, the children will be learning about how they can use their head, heart, and hands to support children in need.

Here at St Mary’s. we will be holding a Crazy Sock and Hair Day and encouraging the children to donate a gold coin on Friday, 27th October to support children in need around the globe.

Donations will be forwarded to the Catholic Mission.

Room 5 will lead us in Liturgy on this Day at 8.30 am in the hall.

Making Jesus Real (MJR): Each week we have a whole school MJR theme. One theme for the next few weeks is 'Spirit of Jesus'. During this time children are encouraged to recognise and show the Spirit of Jesus on the playground. Some of the areas children will be looking at are how we treat each other with kindness, respect and being a good friend.

Kiss and Go

As we strive to ensure the safety and efficiency of our daily drop-off and pick-up routines at St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, I am writing to remind you of the "Kiss and Go" rules and the importance of adhering to them.

The Kiss and Go Zone, located on Cavenagh Street, plays a crucial role in maintaining a smooth flow of traffic during these busy periods. It allows parents to drop off or pick up their children quickly and safely, minimising congestion and ensuring the well-being of all students. Please take the time to review our school Kiss and Go video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=8p3NoK0xSFU&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stmarysnt.catholic.edu.au%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY&feature=emb_logo

To reiterate, the Kiss and Go Zone operates during the following times (please refer to signage):
Morning Drop-off: 8:00 am - 8:30 am
Afternoon Pick-up: 2:35 pm - 3:05 pm

During these designated times, it is essential to observe the following guidelines:

No Parking: Please remember that parking is strictly prohibited within the Kiss and Go zone during its operational hours. This is enforced by Darwin City Council and is in place to maintain a steady flow of vehicles and ensure the safety of all students. Stopping briefly to drop off or pick up your child is permitted, but please refrain from parking, entering the school and leaving your vehicle unattended. Please note that vehicles left unattended are subject to parking fines. If you prefer to park and walk your child to the school gate, please use the Lindsay Street student entrance.

Efficient Drop-off/Pick-up: When using the Kiss and Go zone, we kindly request that you pull up as far forward as possible to allow other parents to access the area efficiently. This simple gesture helps prevent unnecessary congestion and delays.

Stay Alert and Patient: As the Kiss and Go zone can become busy, it is crucial to exercise caution and remain patient while waiting for your turn. Be mindful of pedestrians, other parents and ensure the safety of all students and staff members. If the zone is full, do a lap around the block until you are able to safely enter the line.

By adhering to these rules, we can collectively create a safer and more streamlined drop-off and pick-up experience for everyone involved. We deeply appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain an environment that prioritises the well-being of our students.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Kiss and Go zone or any other matter related to St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, please do not hesitate to contact the front office.

Remember to always "choose safety, over convenience".

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
