Principal's News

Week 10, Term 3, 2021

Dear Families,
Welcome to our new look newsletter! To improve communications across the
School as of Term 4 our newsletter will be sent out weekly on Friday afternoons via
Schoolstream. We have also been working hard behind the scenes to update our
School website, please follow the link below to view the Website.

There is an excited buzz around the school community today as our big 21 Century Dance Concert day has finally arrived. I’ve been lucky enough to view most of the rehearsals across the school and Early Learning Centre and I know you will be delighted with the wonderful performances of the children tonight. One of the most rewarding things for me as an educator is that I get to see children shine and demonstrate their talents in such a confident and exuberant manner.

Speaking of talent. A huge congratulations to Balin for his magnificent representation of St Mary’s in the interschool Public Speaking competition hosted by St Francis of Assisi last Friday. Balin, chosen from twelve St Mary’s students, delivered a well prepared set speech on the merits of water conservation as well as a brilliant Impromptu speech.

As we move into the two week holiday period, this is a great opportunity to ensure children have all the correct uniform requirements ready to start Term 4. Across the newsletters this term, I have especially outlined the correct footwear and socks. In recent weeks we have also many children attending school without a hat. Please support us in our endeavour to adhere to our uniform guidelines.

Please refer to our Parent Handbook or school webpage for detail of the expected Uniform requirements.

We welcome Mrs Shannon Feldtman back to St Mary’s in Term 4. Shannon will continue to work in her capacity of Instructional Coach and Mathematics Curriculum leader supporting the strong delivery of classroom teaching and Learning across the school. I know Oscar will love having Mum back at school with him.

We farewell some families leaving our community this term, and I wish to especially acknowledge Mala Penley who is currently one of our St Mary’s School Board members. We thank Mala for her support of both the St Mary’s Board and P and F activities in our school community. We wish Austin (Room 7) Mala and Jake well with their Defence posting to Canberra.

We also farewell the following students and families – Isaac, Dominic, Jed, Maisie and Isla. Welcome to Archie, Evie and Angus and family.
I look forward to seeing you all tonight at our amazing Dance Concert.

Pupil Free Day

download
St Mary's Catholic Primary School has been approved for a pupil free day for day one Term 4, Monday 11th October. On this day our teachers and support staff will be trained in the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum which is a requirement of all Catholic schools in the Northern Territory. The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum is a world class, evidence-based child safety curriculum that is delivered to students by educators that have completed a comprehensive training course.
The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum is developmental and consists of two themes:
1. We all have a right to be safe
2. We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust
Our intention is to begin incorporating some of the teachings of this curriculum during Term 4. Details regarding a parent information session will be sent out early in the term.
Vacation Care will be available for this pupil free day. To enrol your child into Vacation Care on this day please complete the form "Vacation Care Booking Form - Pupil Free Day 11th October" which is found in the FORMS section of School Stream. We acknowledge that there has been a short notification time of this closure day, however would appreciate all bookings for OSHC to be made by Monday 4th October.

Intentions for 2022

This week we sent out a letter advising that we are establishing class structures for 2022. We are also discussing staffing for 2022 with the Catholic Education Office. For this reason, it is important that the data we are working with is as accurate as possible.

We kindly ask all families to notify us of their intentions for next year using the “Intentions for 2022” form, which can be found in the FORMS section on SchoolStream. Alternatively, you can complete the form online through this link: https://smcps.myschoolstream.net/?p=9601
If prompted please enter the school code smcps.

It would be appreciated if parents could complete the intentions form by Monday, 25th October 2021.

Made in the Image of God

As a part of our Religious Education curriculum, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School will teach the human sexuality program, Made in the Image of God (MITIOG). This program was developed by the Catholic Education Office in South Australia and all Catholic schools in the Darwin Diocese implement this program. The teaching of the MITIOG program will take place across Weeks 1-2 in Term 4 and the students will be grouped by Year levels and/or gender in Year 5/6.

Information regarding the outcomes covered for each year level has been sent out via School Stream. We strongly encourage families to use the suggested activities to facilitate conversations with your child about these topics.

If you have any questions regarding the program or would like to learn more please contact our Religious Education Coordinator Clare Nolan on clare.nolan@nt.catholic.edu.au.

Classroom News: Room 11

Last Friday all the year 6 students went to St Francis of Assisi to support Balin at the Catholic Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition. We would like to congratulate Balin on his fantastic speech he preformed about the importance of conserving water. He did an amazing job and his impromptu speech made everyone 'Go Wild'.

This week in Room 11, we have been investigating Location and Transformation in Mathematics. The students were able to get out of the classroom and participated in a fun game called "Find the Flag". This game allowed students to use directional language to help their blindfolded partners find their flags. It was very entertaining to watch.

Naplan Student Reports

We have been advised by the Department of Education NT that individual Naplan student reports for Year 3 and 5 students are due to be delivered early in Term 4. We are so proud of all students and their participation in these tests. We look forward to sharing our school results with you soon.
