Tournament of Minds Success at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School 13-Oct-2016

On Saturday 17th September a team from St Mary’s took part in the 2016 Tournament of Minds (ToMs) Competition and came second in the Primary Division for Language Literature. Over 400 students competed in 64 teams from 26 government and non-government schools in the Northern Territory heat. The team was made up of seven students from Year 3 to Year 6 and self-named TEAM JKC which represented the first letter of their names and they liked to think of as Team Just Kicking Competitors! They expressed an interest in taking part in this year’s competition and are a sub-group of St Mary’s larger Enrichment Group who meet weekly and work on a range of challenges designed to broaden their thinking skills and tap into their particular areas of interest. Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. The tournament aims to help students develop enterprise, creativity and time management skills, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. The team prepared for about four weeks prior to the competition on a long-term challenge with a Language Literature theme. A facilitator was allowed but all ideas came from the students themselves. They decided to choose a range of characters such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater, Ginny Weasely, Darth Vader, Willy Wonker and Mona Lisa who were forced together due to a zombie apocalypse and needed to share some food and explore their own positive and negative character traits. The team also took part in a spontaneous challenge which they were presented with on the day and worked together to creatively respond to a given scenario/visual. All those involved should be congratulated for their dedication to excellence, commitment to the team and willingness to get in and have a go. They have made all from St Mary’s Community very proud!
