Bombing Of Darwin 19-Feb-2016
On Friday 19th February students from Year 5 and 6 and staff from St Mary’s attended the annual Bombing of Darwin Commemorations held at the Cenotaph on the Darwin Esplanade. The service commemorated the 74th anniversary of the bombing and included a re-enactment of the first Japanese air raid.
Those in attendance were reminded of the significance of this occasion when in 1942, 242 Japanese aircraft bombed the city of Darwin. The bombing occurred just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbour resulting in the death of 243 people and the wounding of many others. Much of Darwin was destroyed during the bombing and many ships were sunk in the harbour.
Our school captions, Amber Moore and Andre Riccardi laid a wreath along with representatives from other schools, community and veterans groups, representatives of the Australia Defence Force and other dignitaries.
